One of the ways that we communicate is through speaking. Sometimes, a child has problems making the sounds or words needed to talk. This is a speech disorder. There are different kinds of speech disorders. Your child may have: Trouble making certain speech sounds. Your child may use different sounds, omit a sound, or add an extra sound to a word. This is an articulation disorder. Problems as air moves from the lungs. The air has to move through the vocal cords and make them vibrate. This is called phonation. The air also has to move through the throat, nose, and mouth. This is resonance. If there are problems with phonation and resonance, it is a voice disorder. Trouble with the natural flow of talking. Your child may repeat the beginning of a word or draw out a single sound. This is a fluency disorder, also known as stuttering.
